Take us to the beginning of it all for you - How and when was SLATE COUTURE CAKES born? Up until 4 years ago, I didn’t even know I could ‘cake’ but i have always loved art, so I booked myself a class and did a very basic course in learning how to make sharp edges on the tiers (lets just say that now… hahaha I don’t even remember what I was taught as my style has evolved so much.
So I posted my pic on Facebook as all proud moments are, and then a friend liked it, her friend saw that she liked it and contacted me to make her Wedding cake! To say I was in absolute shock was an understatement, but never one to shy away from a challenge… I started learning all I could to make this one heck of a Wedding cake. Then it happened!
I instantly fell in love with the creative freedom it embodied. I started tinkering with family cakes and for friends and then I thought to myself… I could actually see myself doing this as an actual career, so I did what all creatives do and fell down the Pinterest black hole looking for creative inspiration - then I had my next lightbulb moment.
I came across a pic of a loft style apartment (another one of my loves) and it had everything in it that i absolutely adored - exposed brick, timber floors, black metal beams and a big timber table and matte black kitchen… and I looked at it and said - this is perfect! This is my dream cake creating space, all that it is missing is slate (as in the organic element) then another light bulb…
SLATE! That's what I'll call my business! And everybody I told thought I was crazy, having a cake business named after something hard and not all that appealing unless you can appreciate it, but I was determined to make Slate an iconic name. Fast forward to the present day, and Slate has quickly become an iconic name in the industry and it represents everything that I am. Clean, bold, industrial, sexy and modern.
Did you always know that you wanted to be a sugar artist? Nope, no idea haha I thought I was going to continue down my path of interior design.
Do you have any stories that you would like to share from your experiences? I met a couple that were just the most beautiful people I had ever met, we designed a magnificent masterpiece cake that they adored. Unfortunately, circumstances changed and they could no longer afford to have their dream Wedding cake, and very apologetically asked me to please make them a cake as a surprise that fit within their budget based off of a naked cake picture they had found online.
My heart ached for them, so as my present to the newlywed couple I made them their dream cake anyway! And doing what I would never usually do, I waited until after the ceremony had finished and all the photos had been taken, then I let them unwrap the box that had their dream cake inside. They were thrilled and over the moon, and I loved that I was able to give them the best gift I could.
Advice
Always think outside the square, no longer do you have to conform to the ‘norm’ if your an earthy person, have an earthy stye cake - Life is too short to have to look and think "I wish I'd just asked the question of - is it possible?" Ask away!
Do you have a personal favourite style? Hahaha yes! Anything that has a naturally aged personality. I love creating textures and eye catching designs that make people go WOW because its so different.
Please tell us what you love most about what you do: I love that I have the freedom to create edible art. I have built a business that is based on being in the spotlight of all the most photographed events in peoples lives. My job is to make people smile and seeing that gives me so much love and happiness.
