wedding date: 25 july 2020

90 wedding guests

David and Louise met through mutual friends at a bar in 2012 - "Dave's pickup line was jokingly saying how terrible my smile was!" Louise tells. Together for 7 years when David proposed, the two exchanged their marriage vows at the impressive structure of St Francis Xavier's Cathedral and reception party at luxury hotel The Playford Adelaide.

the proposal.

On holiday together in Bali, sitting on the patio of our room enjoying the sunset and Dave asks if he can ask a question - then gets down on one knee holding up the ring and asks me to be his wife! I respond with "what the hell!" a few times before saying yes! I was so surprised, especially that he'd kept it a surprise from me!

what led you to decide on your Wedding venue?

The Cathedral became very meaningful to us in the lead up to our wedding as it was where we got baptised. The Playford staff were so flexible and easy to work with, and the decor was exactly the feel we wanted, as well as the food being top notch and accommodation being just upstairs, everything was so convenient.

what was the inspiration behind your Wedding theme?

We wanted our wedding to be classic and timeless, not identifiable as from a certain year with trends etc - but most of all we wanted to have fun ourselves and for our guests to have fun.

favourite moment.

Waiting to walk down the aisle and then the doors opening - so many emotions! Then the whole ceremony was absolute magic and every part of it was meaningful to us.

favourite detail.

The cake was so special as it was made by the bride's sister - everyone will not shut up about how delicious it was and the bride didn't even get to eat any! (sit and eat your cake, so cliche!) The flowers were so gorgeous and even though they were small arrangements they were so detailed and we still have the dried elements.

dress/suit shopping experience.

I had only been shopping maybe 2-3 times, was about to secure my dress when my mum who was with me said "let's think for a bit longer." On the way to the car she then said "You could make that" and the rest is history! My dress turned out pretty different to the one I almost bought but it was unique to me and was everything that I wanted. The main fabric was found in a fabric store in Melbourne (Tessuti Fabrics) and is hand painted silk organza from Italy - can't get much more unique than that. It was important to me that I wouldn't see my dress on another bride and this guaranteed that!

what does marriage mean to you?

Marriage is the joining of our souls in the eyes of God, a bond that can never be broken. It is also a promise to give each other grace in hard times and share in the joyful times together.

any classic stories you want to share from the day?

During the ceremony our first reader, one of the groomsman went up to the stand and the script wasn't there, so he stopped awkwardly and had to go back to his seat to get the booklet - funny to look back on! Late in the reception there was also a push up competition which is always fun - the groom came second to the bride's stepbrother!

advice.

Everyone says this but the day needs to reflect you as a couple and something you will both enjoy - it's not just about the bride. Huge floral arrangements are overrated and expensive. Don't try and plan the day to the minute as you won't be looking at the clock when the moment comes - plus something always takes more or less time than envisioned.

stand out vendors.

It was important to us for the day to feel easy and low-fuss, and our photographer really put us at ease and made it a fun experience. The photos from the day really captured the ambience from each part of the day - the reverence of the ceremony, joy and intimacy from the couple photos and party atmosphere at the reception - even though we weren't allowed a dance floor!

wedding songs.
Our first dance was Blue Moon by Frank Sinatra, an absolute classic but is also in one of Dave's favourite video games so a bit of a fun twist for those in the know.
