Kate + Richie met through a mutual friend who went to high school with Richie in New Zealand and University with Katie in America. Together for almost 6 wonderful years before a typical Sunday morning for them… "We set off for a bike ride, around the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in Sydney’s north. We were meant to be riding with friends as we normally would, but this weekend they were both sick (or so I thought!). With deep concern for my friends who were clearly very unwell, we continued riding, and after a few attempts, I was convinced to take a detour down a very steep hill to Cottage Point (a decision I would never regret!). Down at Cottage Point, Richie took me out on to a jetty for a selfie (something that was very unlike Richie to ask for). I obliged and flipped the camera to selfie mode, where behind Richie’s beaming face, I saw a ring!

Venue.
We wanted somewhere that reflected our laid- back nature, a unique space, preferably outdoors, that didn’t require too much decorating or zhooshing. When we saw the Cook’s Borough on Airbnb, we knew that was the perfect destination for our intimate wedding.

Inspiration.
Simplicity, family, love. We had a small ceremony, with our very closest of family and friends. It was a day that not only celebrated our love for each other, but also our families.

Favourite moments.
We had so many! For me (Katie), one of those was the morning of my wedding – spent with my bestie, Emma, who I hadn’t seen in over a year. We prepared for the big day with a walk on the beach, followed by a swim and a coffee + almond croissant (our favourite pastime). For Richie, it was waiting for Katie to appear around the corner of the “aisle”. The first glimpse was just breathtaking!

Favourite details.
One of our favourite details was the bridal bouquet by Bloodwood Botanica. It was just so simple, ethereal, delicate, and elevated Katie’s look so perfectly.

Another favourite detail was the wedding venue, the Cook’s Borough. The venue felt very “us” – homely, perfectly curated.

The Dress + Suit.
For Richie, suit shopping was quick and easy. The team at Peter Jackson were very helpful, and made finding exactly the right suit a breeze.

For me, dress shopping was pretty untraditional. I went shopping with Mum one weekend and found “the one”. I then continued to try on white dresses, mainly just for the fun of it – right up until a few days before the wedding. I ended up buying a second option, and made the decision on the day as to what to wear!

Marriage to us means friendship for life.

Advice.

1.  Make sure you are both on the same page about what kind of wedding you would like. If that’s something you think your family or friends would be surprised by, take the time to explain to them why you’re doing things that way, and ask for their support.

2. Enlist an event planner or maybe a family member who is skilled in that area to help plan things.

3. Make quick decisions and stick with them!

Standout vendors.
Our beautiful Airbnb Host, Sarah was wonderful. She was happy to have us have our ceremony at her property which was a huge win in itself – as we had struggled to find Airbnb hosts who would allow this. Not only did she do that though, she was also so helpful allowing us to do a site visit before the wedding, recommending local vendors and suppliers, and even left us a bottle of wine and a pizza for us on the night we arrived. What a gem!
