"We met at work, so we got to know each other as colleagues and as friends first." After 7 years together, Gillian + Mitchell got engaged! Mitch proposed at Broken Head, a beautiful beach in northern NSW. Broken Head holds special meaning as a family holiday tradition in Gill’s childhood, and a place where they’ve shared many camping trips over the years. "Mitch proposed while we sat up on the dunes and watched the sunset. It was a special moment with just the two of us."

venue.

We searched for a while before we discovered Obi Obi Hall. We liked the idea of somewhere DIY, but in a beautiful outdoor setting. Obi Obi Hall itself is so charming and we couldn’t go past the surrounding landscape of green rolling hills and the cows in the nearby paddocks. We also fell in love with the enormous fire pit, which was a hit on the night. We also didn’t mind having our wedding somewhere out of town, meaning our guests could make a weekend of it!

wedding theme.

We would describe the theme of our day as relaxed and rustic, mostly because it was very much a DIY wedding and we didn’t want anything too elaborate or formal. We tried to focus on a few key elements to create this theme: for example, a huge wooden triangle arbour, timber tables with simple eucalyptus table runners, informal seating arrangements and lots of festoon lighting and wine barrels to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

favourite moment.

Our favourite moment was the moment we saw each other at the ceremony, surrounded by all our loved ones. It is truly an indescribable feeling and all the nerves instantly disappeared!

favourite detail.

Gillian’s younger brother created a special margarita that was served to our guests during ‘cocktail hour’, it was such a fun way to kick off the night and everyone loved it!

dress + suit shopping.

My experience finding a dress was lots of fun, with the help of my mum and bridesmaids. I also couldn’t fault the experience at White LilyCouture – my stylist was the one who suggested I try on my dress. It was not a style that I had imagined for myself but it was definitely the one for me. I’m really glad I was open to trying a range of different styles, as I wouldn’t have found it otherwise!

what does marriage mean to you?

We knew for many years before we got married that we were committed to one another, with many plans and dreams for the future. Marriage for us began with an extremely special, beautiful period of celebration for both of us and our families and friends. It meant standing up in front of our loved ones and vowing to continue loving one another no matter what.

classic story.

We were having such a great time on the dance floor that we completely lost track of time. We happened to look at the clock at one point and realised it was 10:50pm – the buses that were driving our guests home were leaving in 10 minutes! We quickly picked a final song – Steal My Sunshine by Len – and the dance floor went absolutely crazy before we had to tell everyone it was home time. We could’ve easily kept partying for many more hours….

advice.

Plan to take a few moments throughout the day to step away from the action and just take it all in, together. All of your loved ones, together in one place, there to celebrate you. Our photographer was really great at this and made sure we grabbed a couple of photos away from everything.

standout vendors.

Our photographer, Trent from Albert and Wild, was fantastic. We are so happy with our photos and how he captured the vibe of the day. He was an absolute pleasure to work with, has a great sense of humour and is a true professional in how he gently guided us to ensure we got some beautiful photos. Nikki from Hive Film House went above and beyond in creating our video. She creatively weaved together a story of the day that we’ll look back on with so much love for many years to come.

Our guests raved about the excellent food provided by our caterers, Journey Street Food – Ruby and her team were fantastic and extremely helpful as we made our menu selections. Everyone also loved our delicious wedding cake provided by Zoe at Zo&Co Cakes – Zoe understood from the start what we were after and the cake was perfect!
